Cenotaph for German Forces
The German President Horst Köhler has inaugurated a cenotaph for soldiers who have died in foreign deployments. Currently, there are about 7400 soldiers of the Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) in foreign countries, most of them in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
The cenotaph has been build in the Bendlerblock in Berlin, where Stauffenberg (who tried to assassinate Hitler) was executed. The Ministry of Defence also has a building at this location.
Deaths of Bundeswehr soldiers
Since its foundation 78 soldiers fell in foreign deployments, another 3000 soldiers have died in their own country (e.g. on the road). In the last few months, there have been several attacks on German troups in Afghanistan which led to discussions if the mission is still right.
