How do German Parties choose their Colours?
A German news paper has released and article about how political parties choose their colours.
Bündnis 90/Die Grünen: green
Of course, it is pretty easy why the Greens have chosen green as their colour, but I often wondered why the CDU uses black.
CDU: black
According to Mr. Strünck (professor for political science) this is due to the fact that priests have to wear black clothes and the CDU is called Christian even though some people say that this title is not correct anymore.
Yet, in voting campaigns the CDU often uses orange, probably because it seems much more positive than black.
SPD / Die Linke: red
The colour of social parties refers to the hats of the Jacobin Club which were red. Fighting for the republic this club played an important role in the French Revolution.
The professor also says that socialistic parties use the colour should show that many communists had died in their fights.
FDP: blue and yellow
Liberal parties usually use blue to express a conservative and optimistic attitude. However, there is no special reason for the yellow colour in the FDP logo, this was just the idea of a marketing agency.
Notes
To check the current positions of the parties, please refer to an article about chances in the coming election.
